::taken from The It's Alive Show's myspace bulletin::
After extorting a fee from them while paying all other local stations, Comcast is deleting a local independent broadcaster WBGN from its Greater Pittsburgh systems as of 2/1/09 - this Wal-Mart level crap! WBGN is the last independently owned and operated TV station in the Greater Pittsburgh viewing area, so it's yet another case of the Corporate jerks messing with small indy businesses JUST BECAUSE. That really worked out well for the major record labels, didn't it?
IF YOU CARE ABOUT FREE SPEECH AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE, PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION HERE:

Thanks in advance for your help!
-The Cast of "It's Alive!" and everyone at WBGN TV, Pittsburgh PA

I watch the show online. Best show on tv. I'm glad to see they are using market forces to solve their problem instead of appealing to lawmakers

i do like the channel, but i don't see how this is a freedom of speech issue at all.

i do like the channel, but i don't see how this is a freedom of speech issue at all. Yeah, this is a lot of things, but this is not infringing on anybody's rights by any definition of the word. However, in all fairness, the petition itself seems to steer clear of insinuating that this is a rights issue and instead just says that you should point out your dissatisfaction with Comcast by signing the petition. I would be interested to see what the fees on WBGN's side are and whether or not they could cover said fees by by hitting up their viewers for donations.

i think the free speech innuendo came from idea of the lack of local media outlets, monopolization of the tv market, all those buzz points. just applying the "clear channel" argument to tv.

I just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page here. I really hate when people make exaggerated claims of rights being oppressed when no such thing is taking place. But if you get it, there's no point to continue preaching to the choir.

yeah, the whole "free speech" misrepresentation thing is a pet peeve of mine. we all seem to be on the same page with it here though, so no big deal.

it could be seen as an infringement back when Cable was the only way to get non-broadcast television. Cable companies, like most utility companies that, at one point in time, had a monopoly, were subject to more stringent regulations regarding the safeguarding of free speech, however, now that the television market has grown to include satellite and fios options, there really isn't a free speech leg to stand on... It still sucks, but not much you can do about it.
