Howler's in the one that doesn't take pennies, right? I think I was in there one time, but I remember seeing a sign at the bar.
And does BBT do credit cards? I know that's a kinda silly question, but hey, some bars still don't. And since BBT serves food, I guess it's no smoking?
I'm a terrible Pittsburgh-er, not knowing Bloomfield bars!

On the penny thing.. A while back we had a bartender here, name was Bowman. He was in town for a year hanging while his girlfriend went to school here. Came from Sugar Moms in Philly. He did his year here and went back to Philly and can be found back at Sugar Moms and Tatoo Moms in Philly now. Bowman has/had an odd sense of humor.
Someone walked in on one of his shifts and asked for a six pack (one of the local crackheads probably). When Bowman told this ass it was $8 or $9 bux or whatever it was... this fool actually put a giant bag of pennies on the bar. Like $10 worth of pennies!!
So, he hung the "No Pennies Please" sign. We still don't like taking them. Our prices all round to a quarter so we don't have to deal with nickels, dimes, pennies..
Unless you want them back in change, don't give them to us as payment. But... when we get them now.. the bartenders usually just put the cash in the drawer out of tips and throw the pennies in the big "Spare Change for MS" jar on the back counter of the bar.

I remember Howlers used to be sort of known as a junkie bar. Then it became too respectable and lost some of the characters and me and my friends had to hang out at Pollacs. Now I refuse to hang out with anyone more than 25 percent italian because the smell like grease so I haven't hung out in Bloomfield in a while.

did you move to bloomfield? anyway, as andrew said, the bbt takes cards. its non-smoking, but you can smoke on the deck which has that heated kerosine...uh...thing. i have no idea on the penny thing. best busses from downtown are 86A (goes down liberty) or any of the 77s (go down friendship). the 86B goes down penn and its just a few blocks walk to liberty. Nope…just coming out for the On Vinyl show on Friday. Heat is good. I really hate places that I can’t smoke at. Thanks for the advice on the buses! I’m no good at Bloomfield. On the penny thing.. Ahhhh….that makes sense. For some reason I never thought that I was at Howler’s, but apparently I was! When I asked my husband if he wanted to go to a show in Bloomfield tomorrow, he asked me if it was the “no pennies place” where we saw Face Down Prestley and then I remembered that we were there once. And don’t worry, eventually I will make it out there sometime and I will not use any pennies!

You and your hubby should just stay in Bloomfield over night and do both Bloomfield Bars this weekend. ;D

edit: this is in response to bloomfield being the best neighborhood. i type slow i guess.
disagree on that last point. i mean, its a nice place and all, and i'd be willing to concede '2nd best neighborhood', but i don't think anything tops squirrel hill. its ridiculously conveniently located to: 2 awesome parks, 3 awesome pizza places, 2 (or 3 if you want to count the waterfront) movie theatres. the bars are kinda lacking, but Tomlin drinks at Fanatics so that place is good enough for me and Silky's has shuffleboard and a $2 Hop Devil on wednesdays. Also squirrel cage has the best veggie burger in the city, and HOT CHEESE BALLS.
advantage: squirrel hill.

Berto, no offense or anything dude, but I sort of remember you smelling kind of terrible. I think maybe grease would be the least of the worries.
